Pain in ear and neck when I swallow?

I have pretty severe pain in my ear and mostly the side of my neck when I swallow. I can't figure out if it is my throat or my muscles in my neck. It's very annoying and I've had it for several weeks. The problem is I went to an emergency room and the doctor there said maybe a blood clot (no test though) and told me to go to my doctor. I went to him and he said maybe drainage from allergies. Another doctor said muscle strain. Talk about confused. And I still have the problem and I don't really want to eat much. Any ideas? Why all different diagnosis es. I'm also recovering from whiplash in March.
