It's normal to have side effects from the pill when you are just starting it. It's a lot of hormones for your body to adjust to. You should be protected after the first pack of pills. They prevent you from ovulating, so you don't get pregnant. There is always that very slim chance though... so if you don't get your period during the next 7 day break, take a test.
